This work is inspired by my stay in Monastir, Tunisia (one of Münster's sister cities) on the occasion of the “15th Festival International des Arts Plastiques de Monastirâ€. The work is based on photographs of details of old ships in the fishing port of Monastir and focuses entirely on their original layers and textures of paint on the wooden planks of the ships' walls. The digital photo is directly printed on thick wooden panel (format 60cm x 40cm) reinforcing the original texture. In addition, the panel is further processed by subtly applying oil paint and lightly engraving and sculpting at points the surface of the wood. This combination of techniques means that sometimes the created visual structure is confused with the real structure, creating a trompe l'oeil.
