In the Los Angeles region, the Native American population grew from 8,839 to 60,893 between 1960 and 1980. My mother moved from the Navajo reservation to Los Angeles during the Second World War in her late teens. I was born and raised in the suburbs just east of LA, driving to the Indian Center with my mother to pick up donated cans of food and clothing, and to visit with other relocated and assimilating Indians. The series reflects on these memories and the effects of assimilation on Native families.
