The Medicine man is a series of painting, from no. 1 to no. 4. It is part of an ongoing series and is painted as an homage to my mother who died 10 years ago. Through the process of creating a painting, I observe that painting is a healing medium and process, and often times, a therapeutic one, both to the viewer as well as to the artist who created it.
At the artistic level, my painting deals with figuration, in particular of the interior subject, and the living room. I can think of the masters of the small format painting from the Northern Netherlands painting school to Post impressionists, and to the School of London painters. Not forgetting other important painters from different art periods and places who constructively built their subject matter; be it in the forms of spatial context adding the still life paintings, or taking human figures to dominate the interior scene. I have concentrated here on my mother's expression, and dresses. Her image fittingly occupies the central space of the painting.
