This painting refers to the topic of the Annuciation and it's depiction during the Quatrocento. The architecture is suggested by the visible fold lines on the canvas, and the event is suggested by the composition and disposition of the two subjects in it. The title "Mantis ange Mantis" is extracted from the following poem in which the parallel between the praying mantis and the archetype of the angel is used to signify the uncannyness of a third kind encounter.
