Malinconia n. 1 is the image of waiting and, perhaps, also of surrender.
It represents a young woman, seen from behind, of which only the profile can be guessed.
The image of the woman is still, static, almost suspended in anticipation of something that never seems to arrive; nevertheless the woman waits, almost overwhelmed by the inevitability of her own surrender and her own destiny.
The natural yellowing of the book pages on which the image is painted, then, seem to dilate and make infinite the passage of time which, however, does not seem to scare the woman represented. In spite of everything, she is still confident, firm in her intention of waiting.
