In this artwork I explore the profound impact of my mother’s strict religious beliefs on our challenging relationship. Forbidden to have any contact with me after I made the decision almost half a century ago to walk the path of live different and left her religion.
My artwork includes the eyes of my mother, symbolic of her watchful presence despite the physicial distance. The centerpiece is a heartfelt poem she wrote, urging me to follow the small path, eschewing the broader ways of those who do not share her beliefs. She is convinced that disbelief would only lead to sorrow and detoriation.
As I intricately played with fibers, paint, paper and dried flowers, I sought to grasp the profound truth that she still loves me, albeit unwilling to acknowledge me directly. Through this creative process, I found healing and understanding of embracing our unique paths, even admidst our differences.
