These powerful giants stride the high Rockies of the Beartooth Range of Montana (the actual "bear tooth" mountain is seen in the distance, center right). They are the apex predators in their natural domain. We live with them, we sometimes see them as we hike and we give them great respect, distance and awe. Life is about co-existing and mountain communities do their best to keep this harmony and balance among the wild beasts. It is symbolic of the "hozho" or walks with beauty way that the Navaho Native Americans speak of-keeping the balance with nature in your life and relevant today for all species' survival. The American Grizzly is a force of its own, yet can be seen sometimes lying among flowers catching the sun. But don't be fooled-they can run 55 km an hour and cross a meadow in seconds! Native Americans have tested their courage by confronting these beasts with just a knife. When standing the grizzly can be 2.1 meters in height and weigh 800 kilos!
