Cheng Yen Yu (b. 1998, Pingtung, Taiwan) is a visual artist based in London, UK. He holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London. His practice spans painting, installation, and ready-made objects, emphasizing the materiality, purity, and narrative potential of materials. Rooted in pintura matèrica (material painting), his work explores geography, historical narratives, and cultural hybridity.
In 2020, Cheng presented his solo exhibition The Observer’s Eyes at the Kaohsiung Cultural Centre, Taiwan. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including SET IN MOTION – LONDON X COLD MAGAZINE (Old Street, London, 2024), Echoes of Entanglement (L’ART, South Kensington, London, 2024), Tutussie ArtFair – A Part of Us (Mayfair, London, 2024), About Time (Swanfall Art Gallery, London, 2024), Material Voices (ST.ART Gallery, Oxford Circus, London, 2024), and Transitional Trace (MP Birla Millennium Gallery, London, 2024). His work has earned several honors, including Merit Awards from the National Art Exhibition ROC (2018, 2019), the Taoyuan Contemporary Art Awards (2019), and finalist recognition at the Colors of the Rainbow Nation International Watermedia Festival, South Africa (2019), as well as several regional art competitions and biennials across Taiwan between 2017 and 2019.
