In Formidable (Bio) my aim was to create a piece that would reflect and homage the textural and theoretical idea of space when confined to a single sheet of paper. Nothing is more organic than the pure nature of space and the interactions of colors and materials in it. As such, I used the texture of the wet paper being sanded, then being dried, to provide an almost three-dimensional aspect to the piece. Layers of oxidized turpentine and brou de noix were applied with minimal dry time, resulting in layers of color and unique textures being revealed as the paper was sanded back and naturally warped without any intervention. The upper coats of gouache and china ink were applied to emphasize the contrasting darkness and saturation of the upper layer, with the more light and delicate lower layer.
