“Eye of the storm” is the suggestion of something dark that looms, attracts you, sucks you up to catapult you into infinity.
A project that starts with a series of drawings representing an oncoming storm materializing itself in a circle shape which in turn will head towards infinity.
What is a circle?
The circle, circus in Latin, kìrkos in Greek, meaning “ring”. It is a primordial shape that symbolizes the birth-death-rebirth cycle, the ouroboros, the snake that bites its tail, the unity, the absence of division. Symbol of the sacred, archetypal form of sanctuary and connection with metaphysical principles: the stone circle of Stonehenge, the Tholos of the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia in Delphi, the Temple of Hercules Victor in Rome, the Pantheon, the Rotunda of Thessaloniki. The circle as symbol what is celestial, the soul, the sky, the sun, the unlimited, God. The circle of the celestial spheres movement, the cyclical time, the place that ends where it begins, in a static and dynamic time.
We often ask ourselves: have I already lived it, have I already seen it? The answer is yes! It has already happened, it has just transformed itself. The circle expresses the meaning of life, completes the cycle of our existence. An existence already marked by a succession of events we are forced to be part of, finding ourselves while we follow a path already traced for us. The path is traced but we can follow it in many ways: dancing, pirouetting, hopping, running on the canvas of life, drawing on all the forms that we bring along.
The circle is energy flowing and transforming itself. Everything changes, everything flows, “panta rei” within a circle. Life and death at the end become one same thing because “the way up and down is one and identical” (Heraclitus).
Is there any life outside the circle? Is there an alternative to the circle of destiny marked for us? Are we ready to face the surprises and risks that the leap out of the circle can hold for us? Perhaps we fear that going out of the circle is a profanation of a sacred space, a bold transgression which, however, could allow us to draw an “other” circle.
What role does the square play in all that? The angular canvas that interrupts the perfection of the lack of corners of the circle. The circle inscribed in the canvas / square is the symbol of the divinity hidden in the matter to give it balance and harmony.
