Art has many
important functions; it also needs to focus our awareness and remind us that
indigenous people of our world have been globally prosecuted, decimated through
genocide, dispossessed of their land, forced to abandon their ancestral believe
systems, adopt alien religious concepts, and forced into slavery, and are still
immensely suffering. The remnants of their cultures are only being studied now.
This work
intends to show the devastating avalanche of the so called superior,
technologically advanced cultures and their immoral, pretentious and
hypocritical concepts crushing onto indigenous people, from which they could
not and never will be able to escape. These people
have been marked as primitive savages until recently, when a minority of ethnologists and
anthropologists have started telling us otherwise.
I believe that art
has not yet addressed these crimes sufficiently. The “admired” Captain Cook
e.g. when he discovered Australia, did not acknowledge the existence of
aboriginal people as being human, hence describing Australia
as “terra nullius” (nobody’s country), with devastating consequences mainly for
the aborigines people but also for the occupying settlers, which became clear
much later!
