My painting explores the gap between representation and mimesis. Making images of living things is a project with failure written into its code, but it seems to be written into our coding as human beings, too. From the official portrait painting to the intense, melancholy concentration of remembering the details of a moment in the past, we 'see' in images.
I examine formal languages, thinking about where they come from and what they are for, and I think about how I think about other subject positions; for example, in this painting I represent the two living things in a linear way and a painterly way and I wonder whether one is more or less 'real' than the other. The cat has his eyes closed, while Ensor the young mastiff looks out at us with eyes that seem strangely human.
