The colors I chose for this acrylic abstract painting are symbols for all of Creation.
White to represent light and the clouds through whose divinely assigned mechanism, we get life-nurturing rain.
Blue, the color of the sky and the oceans and to represent all the creatures within it.
Green, to represent all the flora, plants and vegetation on Earth.
Red, to symbolize the blood which runs through the veins of humans and all the fauna.
Amethyst, to represent all the unknown dimensions and entities such as the Angels and Jinns which we know exist and yet to our eyes, remain unseen.
And in the center of it all is the arabic letter “و” (wao) in mirror image.
The shape of the letter “و” is reminiscent of the very first form a human being exists in before being born in to this world, the fetal position.
In Sufism, “و” symbolizes Divine Love and Unity.
In Arabic, the letter “و” translates to the word “And”, an English word used to connect words, clauses, sentences and anything that is to be taken jointly.
When I see the calligraphy of “و” in a mirror image, and imagine its significance spiritually, I am reminded of the 99 Names of Allah swt in Islam and all His Attributes.
He is, the Most Compassionate (Al-Rahmaan)
And Most Merciful (Al-Raheem)
And The Truth (Al-Haqq)
And The Self-Existing One (Al-Qayyum)
And The Light (An-Nur)
And...
Any ‘and’ applied until infinity would still not even begin to encapsulate all of God’s Magnificence.
What a wonderful thing to recognize, that even a common, lifeless, word, such as “و”, stands in humble testament, while serving its unique purpose, in glorifying the Lord who Created it all.
