“CORONA
VIRUM” acrylics
on wood, cm.126x63 - July 2020
Corona
virum (contraction of virorum, plural genitive) or crown of men.
Six
human beings free-falling into the void.
The
setting of the composition is the wood itself which, with its veins,
acts as a support and background for the work.
The
reference for assonance with the coronavirus scourge is explicit in
the title.
But
the image is also an allegory.
The
crown of men is also a combat formation that Roman soldiers practiced
in encircling a post or the enemy himself. Here the "crown of
men" becomes a metaphor for social strength which, thanks to
human solidarity, is built to face the danger, metaphorically
represented by the abyss of free fall.
