Since shadows emerge from the interaction between light and things, they are evidence of something being material not just abstract. Shadows can thus be tools through which to understand the relationships that humans form with different concepts and objects. Chanbyul Park combines material research of shadows with scientific, historical and intuitive research into metaphysical concepts such as time and light.
In the past, there was the only one light source, the sun. It means that there was only one shadow. People applied this principle to create sundials. They regarded the movement of shadows as time and follow the single shadow. That type of human life with the sun is called Morning person. In the past, this was the only form of human life.
These days, however, human has invented artificial light sources, the light bulbs. Now we can see tons of artificial light sources and tons of shadows anytime, anywhere. Shadows arise according to the number of light sources. One light has one shadow, and two light sources have two shadows. This phenomenon means we no longer live along only one shadow and one clock hand. In fact, after the invention of light bulbs, the type of Night owl was born. This is a very natural result of the interaction between humans and light bulbs. People are surrounded by various lights such as light bulbs, neon signs, and smart phone screens. It correlates with the result of diversity time types of people.
Now human lives in variety forms of life like Evening person or Dawn person since human go beyond one type of time types of Morning person. Since human moves on to the next chapter where there is variety forms of lives are coexisting like Evening person and Dawn person, humans need to accept the shifts from the past. On the painting, A number of clock hands that spread represent various human time zones.
