Museum institutions have been the bearer of
historical information that all of us have fallen victim to in one way or
another. For a young Caribbean boy the
first memories of such visits begin to shape his views, values and how he
sees the world. Only later to bring about
a set of contradictions around his heritage and the make-up of his own parents’
cultural practices.
Young creatives in the African Diaspora often
experience a sense of isolation within their own community as artistic professions
are rarely at the top of the list of career options. This work depicts my own journey and recalls the
impact of those first museum encounters.
I have tried to record those dismembered images and reconstructed them
into a narrative that helps to explain this experience.
