San Pablito, Puebla in Mexico is home to an Otomi community, a town that has been in charge of the elaboration of amate paper, canvas of codices and pre-Hispanic books, it is a society that has preserved this millenary knowledge of great historical and cultural importance. For the community of San Pablito, amate paper has a great epistemic value, it is indispensable in the way they relate to their daily reality, used in religious, medical, magical and spiritual practices. My father was born near this place.
"Cantar nocturno" tells a story through the generations, the star that opens the heavens as the window to a spiritual world where the gods give life to the world, illuminating the unknown that is hidden in the darkness of the night.
In the production of amate paper, a resulting product is a thick ink, the sap of the jonote tree from which the fibers for the paper are extracted. The dark brown ink has been used for centuries and is part of the colors used in "Cantar nocturno" and in the rest of my work.
