This painting was made after photographing a canal in Hamburg at dusk. It fits into a series of paintings focusing on the idea of nocturne, in particular trying to capture this time of day, its light and atmosphere. The canal was a dividing line between privately owned summerhouses and one of the city's public parks. This idea of public and private spaces is another important reason behind why I paint particular places.
