My paintings explore the interplay between simplicity and complexity,
using simple stripes to create intricate compositions. This
process also
reflects
my fascination with the complexity of the world around us and
how we perceive and interpret it.
Through
my paintings, I seek to build complex constructs out of fragments,
symbolizing the fragmented experiences that we piece together into a
coherent narrative.
In
our increasingly digital and interconnected world, we are constantly
confronted with fragmented images, sounds, and information. I
view
my creative process as a
means
to
process
these
everyday impressions, experiences and
encounters, while also drawing inspiration from the urban environment
in which I live.
With
each
fragment
and
each line added to the canvas,
new
possibilities arise, new
compositions
emerge
and
new
meanings
are
created. My
paintings can
thus
be
considered as
sites
of open
exploration
and
interpretation, especially due to their non-representational nature.
The
use of contrasts reflects
my
fascination with
the tension between opposing forces, such as order and chaos, or
clarity and ambiguity. While
the
soft, diffused color gradients underscore the fluidity and ambiguity
inherent in a postmodern world, the sharp, well-defined edges and
straight lines create a sense of order and clarity, representing a
response to the challenges posed by this complexity.
The
contrast between crisp edges and blurry color gardients is also a
play between surface and depth, or between two-dimensional
and three-dimensional space. While the hard-edge stripes suggest a
flat surface, the soft color gradients suggest a more complex,
layered space that extends beyond the painting’s
surface.
The
repetition of geometric shapes creates a sense of rhythm and a visual
structure that is greater than the sum of its parts. Through the
rhythmic interplay of stripes, I aim to cultivate a sense of harmony
and resonance within my compositions. It is not the individual
stripes but the relationships that emerge among them that constitute
the essence of my work.
Overall,
I aim to capture my impressions of the world in my paintings and
reflect on the ways in which construct meaning based
on our perceptions.
In doing so, I hope to invite viewers to reflect on their own
experiences, challenge
their preconceptions
and adopt
a fresh
perspective.
