Ballerinas who sacrifice their own bodies to dance on stage.
In the 18th century, ballerinas were considered vulgar and were treated like prostitutes by their male patrons.
Even now, when the situation has eased, the shadow of men still lurk behind the curtain.
A ballerina's career is ephemeral, ending when she is no longer able to dance, but permanent positions such as director continue to be dominated by men.
I drew an iconic drawing of the beautiful but dangerous ballet culture of Edgar Degas, who left many ballet-themed paintings in the 18th century.
