This piece is part of a series
where I reflect on gender violence and women's identity, called "Useless
tactics of female empowerment" (Tacticas inutiles de empoderamiento
femenino). I use real fabrics from clothing, buttons, and other materials as
metaphors of what women cover or discover when choosing how to dress every day.
The colors and textures represent the many personalities that we have. However,
the harassment lived daily in the streets in form of catcalling, can determine
the way women dress. I present with this piece an alternative, an armor to be
protected from this violence. The names of each piece comes from real
catcalling collected from a survey I did in 2016.
This particular
piece has a wedding dresses, real fabrics on top and small details with embroidery. The background is a fabric that is used for the home, for furniture, and of course, the place where we as women are confined. It is hanging from 2 brooms, like a coat of arms.
