I owe the inspiration for this work to the Dutch painter and engraver Hendrick Goltzius (1558 to 1616). The model was his print "Phaethon" from his series "The Four Fallers".
For me, this work is both a frightening and fascinating allegory of the consequences of human hubris in the face of the laws of nature and reason.
The picture was painted on the reverse. This painting technique lends the work a special luminosity and depth. At the same time, it is partially transparent, which emphasises the plunge into emptiness.
