‘A 21st century dream’ addresses the role and self-image of an employee in a global tech company. The golden fruit basket in the right corner symbolises the whole range of attractive incentives these companies offer, such as working from home, state-of-the-art devices and a free fruit bowl, which they sell to employees along with the promise of fun, meaning and self-fulfillment. However, the reality of these kinds of hyped companies is often very different. Instead of meaning, employees often experience alienating work staring at a screen. The only corporate value companies really have is increasing their share price. Hierarchical pressure and competition obscure the image of ‘one big corporate family’. In line with Calvinist concepts, which are seen as one of the many origins of capitalism, the worker in the middle of the picture has a halo, which represents the attempt to experience meaning through success and hard work.
