A World Tree is a tree that is allowed to become as old as
possible. My wish, which I have visualized in this work for the
Oriental Plane Tree (Platanus Orientalis) in our park is that this tree may grow many
more annual rings. The Plane Tree was planted in 1870 and an official
world tree certificate was given in 2014 and is monitored by experts and people from the neighbourhood. This way this Plane Tree can
become more than 500 hundred years old!
The heart of a tree consists of
dead wood. The tree's life sap flows through the outer, thicker rings,
called sap. The sap, along with the bark, is the living part of a tree.
Old trees often become hollow; the dead wood provides nourishment for
much life in and around the tree. The natural habitat of bees is a hollow
tree in forest. We all know the image of a bear taking honey from a
tree.
