Concept.
On sunny days, when the sun shines and a certain amount of wind blows, light is led into the space from the pipes in the ceiling, creating a phenomenon of light that looks like drops falling onto the surface of water. The light constantly moves with the wind and falls down to reveal new sights. This architectural space is a remarkable manifestation of the seasonal, daily and time-of-day changes caused by the atmosphere, and the sights that can be experienced differ depending on the time of day when you visit. It is an accidental creation of nature, which we humans cannot manipulate.
Overview.
This work was presented together with a research thesis as a doctoral graduation project. The observation deck in the university is located between the Ueno Zoo and the university, and is a place where you can feel the richness of the vegetation and the presence of animals, which is hard to believe in an urban environment. One of the characteristics of this environment is that it receives the full movement of the sun, from morning to evening, and also allows the wind to pass through. This is an architectural work born from this environment. He designed the space based on the shape of the land, the direction of the sun and wind, and the average wind speed, and did everything from design to construction with his own hands.
Functional overview
● Phenomena: The length, diameter and fabrication of the pipes were determined according to the average sun and wind, and the spread and intensity of the phenomena to the ground were designed. A structure was also created in which the prism rotates at a wind speed of 1.5 (m/s). Clear acrylic pipe: H1000mm x φ80mm x t = 2mm (sandblasted outside), Prism: D30mm x W100mm, Clear Polycarbonate: H60mm x W180mm x t = 0.5mm, and Bearing.
● Architecture : The walls are in the form of louvers, with a 1.5 cm gap in one direction. The gaps kept the illumination in the space at a dim 30 lx level, similar to a tea room. Also, air was constantly circulated inside to regulate the temperature. [Wall] field edge, plywood, painted: water-based protective paint (charcoal black / inside, silver-grey / outside), spacer. [Top] shallow wood, plywood [Floor] plaster finish (coarse grain, white)
