Around the end of 1955, in water
conservancy projects across the country, reservoirs and dams were built one
after another.Between the end of 1955 and early 1956,
the Primary Agricultural Production Cooperative organized villagers in offering
voluntary assistance to the current Shaxi Reservoir, including clearing
vegetation, carrying soil, manually tamping down the soil, and laying turf. The
Primary Agricultural Production Cooperative covered four villages, namely Dakeng, Baihuangtian, Nanshan, and Shek Pik Long. Maintenance of the Shaxi Reservoir was completed in 1958, and
following this there was gradual reinforcing or repairing work. The main
functions of the Shaxi Reservoir are to prevent floods
and to provide drinking water for the surrounding villages and Taipingchang town.
Resident creation of the Signals
from Earth in 2020.The stumps and tree roots used were taken from the
Reservoir. As recalled by older residents, there used to be a forest that
separated the four villages at the bottom of the Reservoir. Local people played
and worked in the forest since they were little kids. After learning this, the
artist hopes to remake the head of the old tree that has been buried under the
water for more than 70 years, so that its roots are deeply embedded in the
rammed earth wall left over from the top of the dam built by the local
villagers, something to look upon and recall the golden memories of times gone
by.
At the bottom of the reservoir,
there was a temple to the God of the Soil and the Ground at the Sanjia water point. The Lord of the Soil
protects the earth and water here.
