Concept.
A beautiful view of Naoetsu and the Sea of Japan is so familiar that you might overlook it if you weren’t paying attention. The seawater scooped up in this piece keeps the same surface as the sea, and reflects the colour of the sky like a mirror. The colours of the sky that appear in reflection there are not the same ever, changing every day, every hour, every minute, every second. By cutting out a section of the magnificent sea and scooping the sky and rearranging them, the familiar scenery is reconstructed into several smaller units. The feeling of grasping the entire world in one’s own hands calls back to the “emotion” and “discovery” that we have almost forgotten in everyday life.
Event Overview.
Mutual Sympathy for the Future; Here in Joetsu, there are hidden layers of wisdom, pride and beauty that come with living in such a unique climate. This is the inheritance that our incredible ancestors have passed down through the ages, that we must illuminate far into the future. We want to create a landscape where culture and art serve as a bridge so that everyone can feel the charm and liveliness of the city as we look out to imagine the city 100 years in the future. In the summer of 2021, those of us living now aim to create a Naoetsu that those of the future will enjoy, to carry the art created for this land to foster a new, future-oriented civic pride. Art exists in the eye and the heart of those who touch it and experience it, and there are as many differences as there are people. Enjoying this diversity can also become the strength of the town. We now find ourselves in unprecedented, uncertain times. Though we may not return to the normal ways of before, we believe that our art holds the possibility to open up a path to a new society. We will take one more step toward the challenges of the future on this road we have travelled together.
“Sea/Town/People”; Prospering from rich nature as well as from a shipping industry, Naoetsu is a port town on the Sea of Japan. From ancient times, trade, squeezed together with a mix of people and cultures, has created new value. Within this activity lies the seeds of art. Art is technique which comes from the root of humans, and is the breath of beauty in our daily lives. Responding to a time called history, and a space called city, art gently shakes a sense in us that we are not usually conscious of. People are towns, and towns, people. If people change, the town will change, and if the town changes, people will change. The summer of 2021, everyone coming together in this seaside town created and shared new experiences that can only be had here. Something new can be created when we look with new eyes at this dreamlike scenery of sea, town and art. We hope to pass on this gift from us living today, to the future, like the old ships crossing the sea, passing from harbor to harbor.
