Horizon
is a site-specific sculpture that celebrates the surrounding natural
environment. Using water as a sculptural material, Horizon
temporarily transforms the viewer’s experience of the site, where a lens effect
turns views upside down. Designed to interact with the surrounding landscape,
the work was originally created for Sculpture by the Sea (Bondi 2013) with an
oceanfront location, and the ability to interact with the open ocean and sky.
The
sculpture was conceived as a monument to the coastal landscape and the constant
line of the horizon, presenting a deeply engaging work that offers audiences a
dynamic and constantly changing experience. This 'live' work contains the
subtle movement of passing clouds, changing light, passers-by and shifting
weather, articulating and emphasising the unique atmosphere and time of each
day, shifting with the seasons. It is a universally accessible work for all
ages and nationalities, creating an emotionally moving and whole-of-body
physical encounter through its size and planet-like form.
It
encourages a deeper connection to its place and the surrounding environment, as
a celebration of the natural landscape. It provides a unique perspective of the
sunrise and sunset, becoming a ritualistic work that can connect deeply with
place and community. This visually simple abstract form was achieved through
complex acrylic engineering technology, utilising cast acrylic and thousands of
litres of water to create a 1.5 tonne spherical globe with a crystal clear
refraction of light. The sphere is placed on a hand finished cast concrete
plinth, sitting at an overall height of 1.8m in order to create a human scale
interaction for the viewer.
