Alchemy is a site specific land art work that comprises 21
stainless steel mirrors inserted across a rock shelf in Bondi, NSW Australia
(2009). The work is inspired by the natural occurrence of reflective rockpools
along the coast, with a man-made intervention to amplify the natural effect of rockpools
reflecting the sky. The work was exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea (Bondi 2009)
and awarded the Art Gallery of NSW Site Specific Prize.
Designed using a detailed contour mapping of the rock shelf
and hand cut card templates, the final work was produced in 2mm 316 mirror
finish stainless steel, using advanced laser cutting, water jet cutting,
welding and polishing to create seamless organically shaped mirrors that were
inserted into a series of east facing rock pools. The work was designed as a
temporary installation with no physical anchors or damage to the rock shelf or surrounding
marine environment.
Alchemy is the first large scale landscape work of the
artist, that marks a series of land art works made over the past 10 years that
pursue an interest in light, reflection and a connection to landscape.
