These three illustrations, Sweeper, Progression and Overwhelmed, are a selection from a larger series inspired by “The Sweeper of Dreams,†a short story published in Smoke and Mirrors by English author Neil Gaiman.
The story has such a wonderful concept: a Sweeper of dreams, the person who clears away the jumble of stories, memories, and images so we can continue on with our day.
My own dreams are always a confused, disjointed pile, which is why the story resonated with me.
I could see these scenes so clearly in my mind.
The style I chose to illustrate the dream incarnations was in direct contrast to the text. I portrayed the imaginary creatures and objects in the way a child might perceive them when they are awake.
This first illustration depicts the Sweeper of dreams clearing away the debris that has accumulated during the night.
