‘Shine Bright like a Diamond’,
Aluminum Dye Sublimation, 100 X 150 cm (40 X 60 inches), 2021.
My inspiration for creating this
work is not the fact that the Fancy-Colored diamonds are rare, one
Fancy-Colored diamond for 10,000 with a few colors which are even more infrequent
- one to a million colorless diamonds. Neither is the fact that during the
recent decades the synthetic diamond industry has taken a leap forward.
Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’, and
especially her (and Sia’s) ‘Shine Bright like a Diamond’ refrain pushed me
toward this creation. I have always been fascinated with light, colors and
reflections and years ago, it was the reason for me to spend my weekends in a
Parisian glass blowing studio as a trainee, so as to learn the secrets of this art.
Later on I spent time with Dale Chihuly in Seattle in order to enhance my competence
of this ancient art.
Now you may better understand why
whenever I hear Rihanna singing ‘Shine Bright like a Diamond’ I turn a bit sentimental.
Recently, while conceiving new ideas related to my ‘Fifty Shades of Blond’,
which is presented here as well, the loudspeakers roared Rihanna’s song. This
was probably the cue I’ve been waiting for, and the immediate result is this
present work.
