This work of data-art was inspired and modeled around a detailed study on tide levels - measured by Centro Maree - applied to a summarised altimetry map of the island of Venice.
The original brief was assigned by the Birmingham School of Art, and it asked for a response to hydrofeminism through a lens of our choice. Highly influenced by the work of Lorenzo Quinn and Norwood Viviano, I produced a digital model, showcasing the curve of increasing surface loss us Venetians experience every time the water reaches 90 cm above sea level.
This artwork is activated by immersion: the liquid gradually hides a quota of the island to the viewer, until the model is completely concealed, a dynamic portrait of the periodical tides and the way they affect our fragile city.
The concept is embodied through glass-blowing techniques, where the structure is fused into a traditional glass – “goto” - turning it into a daily reminder of the slow fading of Venice.
The choice of application is heavily influenced by the work of El Cocal: feminist glass studio in Murano, currently working towards making glass a more inclusive matter to women, as the discipline has a long tradition of gate-keeping: blowing glass is considered “a job for males only”. Witnessing a live demonstration has made me think of glass in its liquid state as a materialization of our raw creative potential.
As a Venetian, glass is in my DNA, therefore having the opportunity to express my environmental concerns through such ad hoc material, makes my concept come full circle.
