Scacco Matto (Checkmate) is
a handicrafted piece of furniture. It is more than a chair: it is a chair, a
container, a shelf, a hatstand and can become everything an imaginative mind
can think of. The object closed appears as a chair. If you overturn seat and
back, in one move, you will discover other functions.
Scacco Matto is eco-friendly
because:
- it is made entirely of
wood (sustainable material par excellence);
- it uses only scraps of
carpentry;
- it is painted with water
varnish;
- it is produced handmade
(socio- eco- sustainable activity).
Scacco Matto is innovative
because:
- it is multifunctional and
can save space: when you need "an extra chair" Scacco Matto has only
to be "closed" and moved through the built-in wheels;
- it can take part in every
decor already present because it has simple shapes and the wood keeps its
neutral colours in different shades present at the same time;
- it departs from the norms
of traditional craft of carpentry. It is composed of eleven different types of
wood placed not according to tradition, that wants the directional continuity
of the veins, but through the combination of square modules of different
thickness, essence and opposite veins;
- it exploits the
natural color of different woods, without masks and straining. It is
treated exclusively with varnish that enhances the natural charm of the eleven
different essences: Sup Gum, Walnut, Poplar Plywood, Iroko, Spruce, Pine,
Chestnut, Oak, Ash, Meranti, Douglas, Pitch Pine. Even the sectioned Poplar
Plywood, which is normally lined with adhesive films to be made
"uniform", is not hidden. The fortuitous contemporary presence of so
many different essences is due to the variety of materials recovered from the
waste of carpentry, then selected;
- it combines various needs
of contemporary society such as to regain the traditional, good constructional
methods without sacrificing modern aesthetics.
Scacco Matto is economical
because:
- it uses recycled materials
(excluding the wheels and steel hinges);
- it is multifunctional;
- the artisan production
process is facilitated by the prior design of only modular square and/or size
"in round numbers".
Scacco Matto hides nothing.
It tries to demonstrate that the simplicity, the shameless naturalness of
various materials, deviating from the "classicism of wood",
handcrafted manufacturing processes that use recycled materials, can be not
only reasonable and sustainable, but can give pleasant and unexpected outcomes of
extreme advanced aesthetics.
Sustainability is the way to think
the smallest architectural element of a home
as the largest garden in the city
and the largest city in the world.
This is the only way to:
"Think global, act local"
(Roland Robertson).
This is how the idea of Scacco Matto was born:
small sustainable architecture.
