Remnant of Neverland is based on the idea that everyday objects have stories to them. Their own special pasts and lives and the scars of their past tell those stories. As I refurbish and restore these broken creations, giving them new life, I also imagine the fictional lives they lived and write it into a accompanying short story. This particular re-purposing and refurbishing project was badly damaged and ready for a trip to the tip before I gave it its lifesaving makeover. This bedside table had been dented and damaged on it's top to the point that the tabletop was not functional and had sunken in with wood rot. The areas I could save, I painted with a large rose that drips down the side. Around the rose I built the lead light where the worst of the rotting wood was. It lights up (obviously, but I learnt how from online tutorials) The fish painting on the side is to tie in with the tabletop fish, as if you're looking at them from the side of a fish tank. Playing with the imagination, taking it back to a childish time where drawers had buried treasure in them, I resin cast little treasures and sand. Making it as if the ocean is flowing out from within the table and it's left its ocean residue in the draw. I wanted to hint at a time where we don't grow old and the magic is still real because who are we to say, that it's not and the things we create don't hold memories of that magic.Â
This bedside table tells its story of its missing pair and it's life as it doesn't grow old but the child who own it does. A remnant of neverland, it's destined to stay the same, never aging except for the scars of neglect that are forced upon it, something I made sure to reflect in the lead light design where some of the glass once it was installed was deliberately broken and then sealed in its flawed state with resin. A literal remembrance of the scars that had been removed by the artist. We should appreciate our past scars, they remind us that we have lived, as this remnant has lived.Â
