In this project, we aim to raise awareness about contemporary issues by creating a piece that balances art and collectible design. The piece captures attention through a striking signal: a glowing red lamp. The robust aluminum casing and the spherical fused glass piece as red light beckon the observer, serving as a subtle yet powerful reminder of the persistent allure that addiction holds. Often, a small trigger, like a lit lamp, is sufficient to prompt a relapse in an addict, and here it acts as a socially charged conversation starter.
The cabinet plays with contradictions by highlighting what is better kept hidden. Practically, it can function as an emergency kit, a liquor cabinet for your finest bottle, or a storage space for items best kept out of sight. The duality between visibility and concealment is a crucial aspect of the design, embodying a certain irony.
When such a work is placed in an interior, it functions as a conversation piece. Even a brief interaction with the cabinet can lead to awareness and reflection on personal habits and broader societal issues. It is designed to be displayed in museum contexts or galleries and stands as a potent statement of my vision as a designer.
My work consistently balances between art and design, with a strong societal grounding. By creating conceptual furniture and objects that explore the boundaries of both disciplines, I aim to add both aesthetic and substantive value to the environment they inhabit. This collection is thus not only a visual statement but also an invitation to dialogue and self-reflection.
