The series is inspired by Korean traditional portrait technique, ’Baechae’, which applies pigments on the back of paper or canvas to reflect them to the front. The harmony between the front and the back painting represents realistic depiction and the invisible of the subject, which known as ‘Jeonshinsajo’, meaning conveys sprit with shape, a high value of traditional portrait.
The notion of Baechae captivated me to contextualize it through lighting design with a subject of self-portrait by colour combination and this series is a first outcome. The work intends to show unconscious self such as some days of emotion, or somewhere impressed by using various materials in the back of light.
Each colour had been chosen in a state of concentration. I start by choosing one colour that I feel could work and continue matching and layering with other colours until I feel it works well with my state of mind and I need to finish. So Most of them took more than a month to finish, so to speak. This flux of making process tends to make me seep into the work and mediative moment. It will also influence my next practice in different ways.
