For this project, I wanted to make a chair with a classic, elegant form whilst combining it with parquetry using wood veneer to generate the geometric pattern for aesthetic embellishment. In the photos attached is a 1:3 scaled model of the chair.
The design for the geometric pattern is inspired by a visit to Venice where I noticed the attention to detail of the floors and thought how intriguing it would be to express geometry like this on furniture and therefore created my own pattern for that very purpose. The pieces themselves were designed on the computer and then cut with precision on a CNC machine to guaranteed a tight fit.
Regarding the form of the chair, I wanted something slick and chic. I took inspiration from the letter K and how the lines projects out from the centre of the letter. This is why the legs create a counter levered effect in relation to the seat, the angular curve and backrest. I also found the curvature of the arms against the rigid form of the chair created an interesting juxtaposition that I wanted to exploit so the sitter feels encased by the curve as they sink back into the chair.
