Based on principles of self-learning, the Galapagos Game teaches the joy of discovery. The game is an open system made of 45 building blocks with 9 geometric shapes that can be laid out to form endless combinations of letters, words or more abstract artistic expressions. The project is all about combinations and possibilities within a visual system. It was made to scribble, write, draw, create patterns, build, and invent. The original incarnation of the game has been acquired by the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2017 for its permanent collection and is set to be a design classic. Due to its success, Galapagos Game has also evolved into a Pocket Game Version, an award-winning modular typeface and app – designed in collaboration with Swiss typefoundry Dinamo – and a series of printed t-shirts and tiles. The Galapagos game takes its name from the Galapagos Islands, home to a vast number of unique species and similar to the countless unique typographic and abstract iterations that can be made with the building blocks. Starting point for the game was to create a physical tool to draw letter shapes. Its wider potential became apparent by testing it on my own children. Galapagos game works within a framework that supports autodidactic activities, operating under the Montessori assumption that ‘everything is in everything’.
In this preciously produced version, each block has a dimension of 7,5 x 7,5 x 1,5 cm and is made of white and red polyester.
