The selected work looks at the work of Hobbes and others as a way to juxtapose ideals of materialism and bodies. By looking at certain industries and seeing how people of color have been commoditized and sacrificed. By juxtaposing Hobbes, Monster and Leonardo Da Vinci, Vitruvian Man which can be seen as ethnocentric representation of ideas of a man being the head of all living things and changing it to a woman of color. Changes the conversation and opens up the floor to a more interesting dialogue between the piece and the viewer about the use of material and symbol.
Leonardo Da Vinci is the western world’s reminder of a civilized culture at the time during the birth of the Renaissance which was a time of Europeanization after the almost 800 years of Moorish rule in Europe after the Dark Ages. Da Vinci earlier works were very much so for governmental enterprise, being that they were some of his high supporting patrons that afforded his lifestyle. Art being the earliest forms of technology certainly is how stories and early narratives floated around and this is true for ancient times. This body of work by Jessica Branch would like to explore identity in the face of industry and commercialization which has always been at the forefront of human suffering and the lessening of morals and values. This is an interesting topic when it comes to platforms like social media and meme culture that is strictly based on a consumerist identity.
