Sophia Lee was born in Taipei, Taiwan and immigrated to Southern California at age 9. Growing up, she moved between the two places, learning languages and crossing cultures. She first studied fashion design at F.I.D.M. then fine art with emphasis in painting at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. She explored various mediums such as performance art, installations, film, and computer graphics. Upon graduating, she moved to New York City and worked in publishing designing & illustrating book covers. When 911 happened in NYC, she put into motion her dream of wandering the world. It was while she was visiting a museum in Kyoto, Japan that she realizes that she can never stop creating. Art is the essence of who she is. She has found her voice and there are lots to say. Her first solo exhibit was held in Taipei, Taiwan in 2007, titled “l’arabesque.” This series explored her love of calligraphy by abstracting the lines into a pattern. Since 2004, she’s lived in LA, Taipei, Portland, where she continues to paint and show her work. San Francisco is where she settled and found her home and artist community. As one who loves the great outdoors, she’s hyper aware of the human impact on the environment. Her recent projects incorporates mostly found materials from both natural and manmade world.Currently, she is an artist at the Journal Building Artist Residency program sponsored by ArtSpan.
