Sergil Sias was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,
surrounded by the silhouettes of the mountains, the “color fields” in the skies
and the movement of the waves at Rio’s numerous beaches.
Like most of the Cariocas, the
spontaneous and easy-going inhabitants of Rio, he loves gathering together
with old and new friends in search of the joy of living, by painting, playing
music, playing frescobol or simply
making jokes and laughing of life whilst enjoying the sunset at Ipanema beach.
This joyful Carioca lifestyle is a theme for
Sias’ vibrant, luminous and animated acrylic whimsical paintings, sometimes purely
contemplative, sometimes including characters, scenes and comments of daily
life in Rio, with a pinch of comic books seasoning.
We can spot in his work the influences of René Magritte,
David Hockney, Edward Hopper and Toulouse-Lautrec compositions, as well as the luminescent seascapes of
William Turner and Mark Rothko´s vibrant Color Field paintings of the mid 50`s,
an eclectic mix liaised by the Joïe de
Vivre that he wishes to share with the world through his paintings, a
breath of fresh air in great part produced in the year 2020, during the social isolation imposed by the pandemics.
Sergil joined Parque Lage’s School of Visual
Arts (EAV) in Rio, the cradle of the Brazilian modern painting rebirth in the 1980´s, in 2017, when he decided to fully dedicate his time to
painting.
He participated in the exhibitions “Escola em transe”, EAV (2017), “27°
Salão do Clube Naval” (2018), 5th "Circuito de Arte Búzios" and 3rd anniversary commemorative exhibition at Galeria
MBlois Ipanema (2020), all in Rio de Janeiro and presented his art on a 30 minutes web live at
“EEI Encontro de Espaços Independentes at Art Rio Fair 2020”.
