My work was exhibited in New York and Boston from the 1970's through the 1990's.
Before “Emanation” in Spring, 2018 at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center (https://www.brattleboromuseum.org/2018/08/10/sandy-sokoloff-emanation/), my last exhibition was in 1993.
I had withdrawn from the art world to focus on the work itself.
Sephirot (The Quabalistic Spheres):
Although I am not an observant Jew, I have been strongly influenced by my cultural heritage. As a child, I loved to draw and early on my grandfather told me, “a Jew may never create an image of G-d”. Still, the Kabballah describes Sephirot as the manifestations of G-d that allow Him to appear in both the metaphysical and physical universe.
Archangels (as referred to by the Zohar, The Book of Splendor):
Isaac Luria explains in his writings that angels are energies formed by the deeds of people. When someone is occupied in acts of creation, the breath that leaves the mouth becomes a vehicle for these angels – through which they may reveal themselves.
As a painter, I want to investigate this paradox: an image that both appears and does not appear.
