I first started painting as a teenager after a near-death experience. I wanted to paint the light I saw so I bought a huge canvas and some oil paints, lots of books on painting and started experimenting.
I discovered the thrill of playing with colour and texture while listening to music and eventually produced my first artwork. A very large canvas of colour and light.
It was my first but also my last for a long time as I married a Mauritian, had two children and then came to live in Mauritius when I was twenty-eight.
Re-starting my life in this beautiful island , looking after my family, and three more children, and running a hand-embroidery company took up all my time and satisfied my creative instincts so I didn't pick up a brush again until I was sixty and a widow.
I moved on to painting with acrylics as well as oils and although acrylics are practical and odourless, oil is sublime. I intend to experiment a bit with pastels and watercolour and as usual I have bought the books. There are also some good courses on the internet.
Painting for me is an expression of feeling not just a copy of something and I am very inspired by poetry especially the work of the poet Rumi .
When I'm painting I see everything in nature through the eyes of a painter and become overwhelmed by the beauty of all I see.
I recently had an exhibition in a gallery and have had several in my own house.
I run a Bed and Breakfast here so I keep the house as a permanent gallery.
