LIVES AND WORKS
LIVES AND WORKS
DATE OF BIRTH
C.Messina ( 1991) is a visual artist living and working in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Originally from Italy, Cristiana has followed the artistic path since a very young age.
She combines art with a strong passion for horses, managing to pursue both paths.
After being working in the equestrian sector, she realised that her vision is more for a natural management of the animal, and that pushed her in the last few years to represent on canvas what the horse is in nature, especially after her experience in Mongolia ( 2019).
“Because the eye gazes but can catch no glimpse of it, It is called elusive.
Because the ear listens but cannot hear it, It is called the rarefied.
Because the hand feels for it but cannot find it, It is called the infinitesimal. … These are called the
shapeless shapes, Forms without form, Vague semblances.
Go towards them, and you can see no front; Go after them, and you see no rear.”
C.G. Jung, Synchronicity: An A causal Connecting Principle
What I am doing in my work is deeply observing the horses interaction and from that I’m trying to study colour harmony.
Trying to get the horse's shape, a space inside the land and the background, trying to get the connection that horses have in nature.
The light that is always in movement is like the horses: always in movement, and if you work en plan air this process is very clear.
So my horses are most likely impression of shape inside a static land.
What I am trying to develop is that connection that is fixed in my eyes.
Using oil colour as a medium, as a language to develop the peace that normally horses have around : as a "music" for the eyes.
What I would love to achieve in the future is shape shapeless that give movement and balance at the same time and speak its own language that at the moment I'm trying to study.

I am what I choose to become.
