Artistically, I investigate how the mind works when escaping the realities of everyday life when daydreaming. Objects and real-life events that may have an underlying tension are transformed by what I call a “sugar coating” approach. Sugar coating is a way to minimize the negative and redress events. Similar to taking an ugly, dirty old doll and dressing her in beautiful new shiny colorful clothes. The tension still exists, the doll or the story is still there, but the weight has shifted from negative to positive, or has it? I believe if I pack the stories in, pack them with paper, gesso, color, candy, ready-mades, layer after layer after layer, that control over past and present comes to fruition and provides for an altered dream state that tells the story in a different way with new light.
