am a visual artist born in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain (November 16, 1965). I am also a Doctor and Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain. I have held solo and group exhibitions for over three decades, and participated in biennials such as "Dak'art 08", Senegal, in 2008. Art centres such as T.E.A (Tenerife Espacio de las Artes) and C.A.A.M. (Atlantic Centre of Modern Art, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) have acquired my work.
My work deals with the ideas of "edge", "interstice", "fold" and "displacement". Living in the Canary Islands, where the concept of the border is linked to migration from the African continent, my work relativizes the concepts of the “frontier”, “border”, and treats the "edge" as the undetermined intermediate space, where things are observed in layers that are about to be other things.
I am interested in the concepts of "edge" and "intermediate spaces" as zones of ambiguity, subversion and restructuring of the usual categories. In each piece, I mix photography with painting, worked by layers and folds of opacities and transparencies, like curtains that allow us to see the stretcher, the structure of the painting. Living in the Canary Islands, a territory that receives African migration, the idea of the shore is very present in my work, as an ambiguous and moving space that is water and land at the same time, relativizing the idea of the border.
I use materials that I recycle, such as the greenhouse nets used, in allusion to the frequent workspaces of people "in transit" of nationality, and I paint with the dregs of paint deposited at the bottom of the jugs or drums where the students throw the paint when cleaning the palettes. I usually leave the painted fabrics exposed in open spaces, lands "on the edge" of the urban and the rural, so that the wind, rain or the sun act on them.
Watching and unveiling, in the works you can guess the shores of Canarian beaches (where migrants arrive from Africa), greenhouses (where some people in the process of "legalization" work), fenced plots in the neighbourhood of Winwood, Miami (an area affected by gentrification), docks in expansion works (gaining space from the sea), or machines combing beaches (cleaning some traces and drawing others). In short, as a resistance to categories, the normative, and the classified, I generate metaphorical spaces of ambiguity and indeterminacy, to point out what is "in-between ", still absent, in transit or negotiation.
