Hélène Lindqvist works an interdisciplinary artist in painting, performance and classical singing. She was introduced to different cultures form the start, with parents from Sweden and Egypt and growing up in Stockholm and Los Angeles.
She studied Italian language & culture, classical singing and stage performance at the universities in Stockholm, Salzburg and Saarbrücken.
She has performed more than 30 leading opera roles, often premiering newly written work, in state and city operas of Germany.
Apart from her voice, the press regularly lauds her uncompromising expressive acting abilities.
In 2019 she transferred her focus to painting, creating big scale acrylic paintings.
Artist statement
I portray mysterious ordinary people. Ordinary people are never what they seem to be.
I take great care in priming my canvas with layers and layers of gesso, different mediums, papers and colors. These can support or contradict the marks and lines of the overlaying image creating a depth and structure to the painting that is tangible, organic and strangely incongruent.
I am regularly in awe as my characters’ ideas on how they want to be perceived are often quite different from what I had planned for them.
In fleamarkets and antique shops I rummage through discarded old books, magazines or abandoned family albums, searching for pictures of forgotten people that I then love back to life.
