Ying Yu Lin was born in 1962 in a small
fishing harbor in Wuci Township of Taichung County, Taiwan. At age 15, he noticed
that an art school was about to hold the entrance exam. Though he had no formal
art training, he just enrolled the exam. On the day of the exam, he didn’t know
how to sketch the landscape. Suddenly, a light bulb went on in his brain. He
decided to imitate other student’s painting at quick speed. When the school
published a list of candidates, he got admitted to one of the best art school
of Taiwan. From then on, he found his artistic talent and decided to dig into
art field.
He was graduated from the Arts and
Crafts Department of National Dajia Senior High School and majored in painting
and sculpture. During school, he was instructed by Mr. Lee Chun Shan, the
spiritual teacher of Taiwanese modern art.
Also under the tutelage of modern
artists, Mr,Buh-Ching Huang and Mrs. Li Jun Xiu , he learned about the
Freudian theory of the subconscious and the surrealist style. He used these
theories and highly unique personal styles to create an artistic style that incorporates local
Taiwanese essence, such as traditional dessert, Karaoke and civilians.
Around 1996, he began to engage in
landscape design, including public art in architecture, landscape architectural
work, and community art. He has competence in spatial concepts in environment
perception.
His artwork is a profound self-reflection
and response, regarding of subconscious and the current social dynamics. As he
explores various cultures, criticizing or attempting to comprehend the
corresponding relationships between otherworldliness and this-worldliness from
aspects such as human desires, commercialized religious rituals, rapid and cold
technological developments, conflicts between human and nature, opposing
various kinds of social consciousness, he tries to follow his own perception and
give both calm or fervent responses to these issues.
