Born in London (1986), raised in Paris and dorset. Her father was the chairman of the Henry Moore foundation and the Wallace collection, this instilled in her an understanding of narration and consequence through visual art. She studied at Kings College in English literature and psychoanalysis. She had her first solo show in london at 21 and has been working solidly since. Lily Lewis’ practice combines multiple mediums including paint, sculpture and the written and spoken word in her research surrounding the symbolic resonance of geometry and shape within the narrative structure of the human body. Combining folklore and myth with scientific theory her imagery and writing evokes visceral feelings in the viewer of how the body perceived it’s own environment, and in so doing, how it is perceived. Her work circles around the stories we tell ourselves about our existence and how we normalise our experiences with symbols of presence that have been used throughout the history of human narrative and mark marking. Her work shows through the simplicity of form, shape and symbol the complexity of the replying human interaction.
