Rory Laycock is an artist based in Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland. Before and during his studies, he worked as a Design Assistant and Moulding Technician at the commercial sculpting company Border Fine Arts with master sculptor Ray Ayres. He then pursued a BA in Fine Art at the University of Cumbria from 2010 to 2014, graduating with a First-Class degree.
Laycock creates works that respond to the state of culture’s consciousness, exploring its continuation into the ‘next unknown state’ within emotional, environmental, and technological social contexts.
Laycock has exhibited nationally and internationally, including being a finalist in the Arte Laguna Prize in the Virtual & Digital Arts category in 2015 with his work ‘Freefall Horizon’. This piece contributed to an international discussion on art and technology for the European Commission in Brussels, where Laycock was invited to speak at the European Parliament on the topic of art and technology policy.
In recent works alongside his studio practice, he explores re-imagining a future through socially engaged practices using technologies with communities in Scotland. Both these practices allow Laycock to explore culture’s current state.
